| Air superiority is not America’s birthright. Our nation’s unquestioned mastery of the skies over the past several decades has been forged in combat and financed by Americans committed to a strong national defense and to protecting lives by providing our fliers with the best equipment possible. Unfortunately, there are signs that the Obama administration’s commitment to maintaining a strong national defense is wavering. This is nowhere more evident than in the Defense Department’s recent decision to terminate the procurement of the F-22A Raptor, the world’s pre-eminent fighter that would maintain our nation’s control of the skies into the foreseeable future. The F-22A’s combination of stealth, maneuverability, sensor-fused avionics and supersonic cruising ability, among myriad other things, make this fighter-bomber an unrivaled deterrent to countries contemplating a challenge to U.S. security at home and interests abroad. Its advanced technology gives it the unique capability to penetrate hostile airspace and to destroy enemy targets at any time of day or night.
