PRESIDENT'S FLAWED HEALTH CARE PROCESS HITS FIRST MAJOR SNAG

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), member of the Senate Finance and Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) committees, today made the following statement regarding the Congressional Budget Office’s (CBO) estimate pertaining to the Democrats’ health reform bill: “At a time when the president is working with congressional Democrats to quickly cram an ultra-costly health care plan through the Senate HELP Committee, followed by a similar approach in the Senate Finance Committee, we were all stunned today to learn from the CBO that the bill will cause more than 22 million Americans to lose their current health coverage,” said Hatch. “This proposal flies in the face of the president’s pledge to American families that they could keep the health care coverage of their choice. The CBO estimate shows that the Democratic proposal will decrease the number of uninsured by about 16 million at a cost of 1 trillion dollars over the first 10 years, or $62,500 per uninsured.” Hatch also cautioned that this CBO score does not reflect the final cost of the Democratic bill as it does not take in to account the cost of a massive Medicaid expansion, a new government-plan, or the job-killing employer mandate. “It is still not too late for us to come together to draft bipartisan healthcare reform legislation that Utahns, and all states, would support,” Hatch said. “The proposals outlined in this bill will balloon Utah’s health care costs and lead to an unsustainable mandate and burden that could throw the state’s budget into the red for years to come.”
